A free typing speed test — practice passages, your own text, or a live race

This is a browser-based typing test that scores two things on every run: your speed in WPM (words per minute) and your accuracy. Type one of the rotating practice passages, or switch to the Custom Text tab and paste your own material — an article, an email, a speech you’re memorising, or a code snippet (minimum 20 characters). Each keystroke is scored live: correct characters turn dark, mistakes flash red, and a cursor tracks your place through the passage.

Your last 10 runs are kept in Session History — WPM, accuracy, time, date and mode — so you can watch your typing speed trend without an account. The solo test runs entirely in your browser: your custom text and results are saved locally and are never uploaded. Typing speed benchmarks by role

For a rough sense of scale: an average adult types around 40–50 WPM, a proficient touch-typist reaches 70–80 WPM, and people who type for a living often clear 100 WPM. These are typical ranges, not hard cut-offs — average typing speed shifts a fair bit by age and experience, and every job listing sets its own bar. The table is a guide to what a good typing speed looks like for common roles:

Treat these as ballpark ranges drawn from common job descriptions, not official standards — employers measure differently, and many test net WPM or a minimum accuracy alongside raw speed.

How WPM is calculated — the 5-character word, gross vs net

Typing tests don’t count “words” by spaces, because real word lengths vary too much to compare. The long-standing standard — used here — defines one word as 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation. That puts someone typing “Mississippi” and someone typing “cat cat” on the same scale. From there the maths is simple:

WPM       = round( (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes )
                accuracy  = round( (correct characters ÷ characters typed) × 100 )

Two honest details about how this test scores you. First, it reports gross WPM — raw characters over time — beside a separate accuracy percentage. It does not compute net WPM, the stricter figure that subtracts your errors from your speed (net = gross − errors ÷ minutes). Read the two numbers together: 90 WPM at 80% accuracy is, in practice, slower than 70 WPM at 99%.

Second, there’s no 60-second countdown. The clock starts when you click Start Typing — not on your first keystroke — and stops the moment you complete the passage, so any pause before you begin counts toward your time, and longer custom text simply gives a longer, steadier sample. You can backspace to fix a slip: correcting it lifts your accuracy, but the seconds you spend cost you WPM, which is the tension the whole test turns on.

A worked example, with the numbers

Say you take a 300-character practice passage, finish it in 60 seconds, and leave 9 characters wrong — a few slipped fingers you didn’t backspace to fix. Here is exactly what the result panel shows and why:

The panel reports 60 WPM and 97%. The 51 net WPM isn’t displayed, but it’s the number a strict transcription or data-entry test would grade you on — which is why chasing the speed figure alone can flatter you. Halve your error count and the gross WPM barely moves while the net figure jumps.

How to actually get faster

Speed is a by-product of technique, not force. In rough priority order:

Learn the home row and touch-type
Rest your fingers on ASDF and JKL; and let each finger own its columns. Not looking at the keyboard feels slower for a week, then permanently faster.
Chase accuracy first, speed second
Errors you have to backspace and retype cost more time than typing a little slower would have. Push accuracy toward 97–99% before you push for raw WPM — the trade-off between typing speed and accuracy is the single biggest lever on your real output.
Practise on the text you actually type
Paste your real emails, tickets or code into Custom Text mode. Drilling the words and symbols you use every day transfers to work faster than random quotes do.
Keep a rhythm, not a sprint
A steady, even cadence beats bursts followed by error clean-up. Watch the live WPM and accuracy as you type, and use Session History to confirm you’re trending up week over week.

Race friends in a live multiplayer typing race

Solo practice is only half of it. Click Create a Race and you get a private room with a share link — send it to friends, family or coworkers and up to 8 racers type the same passage at once. It’s a free, competitive multiplayer typing race with no signup: each person just picks a nickname to join.

While the race runs, every racer’s progress bar and live WPM refresh roughly every second or two, so you can see who’s pulling ahead in real time. The first to finish the passage wins; anyone still typing is ranked by how far they’ve reached and how fast they’re going, and the room closes on a finish-order leaderboard you can share. As the host you can let the room use a random practice passage or supply your own custom text (20–600 characters) for everyone to race. Because a race has to sync several people, the passage and progress pass through a shared room on the server — unlike the solo test, this part isn’t purely local.
